Welcome Pine Students and Parents!
A science fair project is one of the most valuable learning experiences your child will ever have. It is so much more than scientific problem solving. These projects require critical thinking, research, time management, applied communication & Math skills. At the same time, the idea of a project like this can feel overwhelming to students & you as well. We hope this website will help you understand our expectations for the project and help you guide your student through the process. We teach science as a process of inquiry about the world around us. It is not a collection of facts to be memorized & forgotten. Students will be expected to understand & use the process scientists use to investigate our world. Projects should allow student's to show mastery of their chosen topic. A simple project that the student can understand is preferred to a more involved effort that the student understands poorly.
Please note students in 6th and 7th grade will choose either a Scientific Method or Invention project while 8th graders may choose from any three of the options listed above. This website is the central spot for information about our 7th Annual Science Symposium at Pine Middle School in Reno Nevada. For the first time, this year students will be presenting their findings in a digital presentation. Please note that Invention and Scientific Method projects will be judged in the individual science classes. Only qualifying projects will move on to the all-school judging and possibly the regional science and invention fair in March. Students whose projects qualify for the regional science and invention fair will then create a presentation board. All symposium project choices are designed to be equally challenging & will test the same set of skills. Remember, a good project does not need to have a big price tag. If cost is a concern please let your child’s teacher know; we can help.
Students may be able to partner with classmates who have the same science teacher; this is at the teacher's discretion. Ask your student to consider the difficulties of getting together outside of class to do this project before they choose to partner. Projects must be approved by the student’s science teacher & the Local Scientific Review Committee before the work is begun. Please read and sign the parent letter and have your student return the tear-off slip.Print the parent letter by opening the file at the bottom of this page.
At this website, you will find documents related to each project type including project timelines, Local Scientific Review Committee forms, judges rubrics and other resources that may be helpful in this journey. The site will be updated as we progress through the project so check back often. We welcome your comments & questions; please contact your child’s science teacher directly.
Thank you!
